MMM! Here it is, the world’s largest Buddhist temple/monument: Borobudur. Borobudur is located about 40 kms. north of Yogyakarta on the island of Java in Indonesia, and it is totally worth the effort to get here and check this thing out. The structure is massive. . .built entirely out of volcanic rock in the 8th century, c.e.. . .it apparently took 75 to 100 years to build–so much labor cutting all of the stones one-by-one by hand way back when, transporting them to the site, laying them in place so everything is as level and perfect and glorious as possible. . .then doing all of the carvings that depict the Buddha’s entire life, life of people who lived around this thing, and various other symbolic images throughout the whole monument. . .absolutely jaw-dropping and amazing. . .mmmm, aaaahh!. . .here’s to all of the fine folks who conceived, designed, and constructed this thing–jaaaa!! What a great way to continue our nomadic wanderings around Southeast Asia.
The name, ‘Borobudur,’ means something like “monument on a hill,” and that is exactly what this is: a massive monument on a lovely hill surrounded by lots of other hills full of greenery and villages. . .wow! We are honored to be here. . .if you care about wonderful monuments and historical structures in Southeast Asia–or anywhere–then I highly recommend a visit. It’s takes just a little effort and planning–flight to Yogyakarta, book lodging (the magnificent Plataran Resort is a fine choice), a 90-minute drive from the airport–then BOOM! you are deep in it to soak up the good vibes from so many folks who have come here before you and who will come after you. Selamat datang!
I send you substantially magical vibes from Borobudur. . .feel them. . .they will take you higher.
