Magical lockdown sustenance–

YUH-MEE!  Hutong has reopened, and we could not be happier…this joint ROCKS!

The whole staff in any Hutong restaurant that you visit are totally switched-on, inviting and helpful…we love these folks.

The decor is uplifting, and the vibes are magical and satisfying.

And the food and drink are as good as any that can be had in other fine dining establishments…during this visit we are gobbling spicy squid, lobster dumplings with the signature Hutong crust, red lantern soft-shell crab, special fish with noodles and red peppers and soy bao for dessert. . .everything is washed down with cocktails called Szechuan Dragon and Master Qin and a nice bottle of Chenin Blanc–mmmm, aaaaahh–hao-hao!

Things are slowly coming back to life…keep wearing your masks, keep washing your hands, keep social distancing and keep eating and drinking well.

Enjoy whatever you can NOW…this thing is goin’ here, there and everywhere, and where it will stop nobody knows.

I send you soothing vibes from one of the many Hutong restaurants that can be found all over the planet…feel them…they will help you sleep well tonight and every night.

It’s lovely out there.

HK is still OK–

MMM!  Flying back to Hong Kong for a connection to some place in Southeast Asia is always magical for us.  We check the weather…we read the paper for some government-approved perspective on what all responsible citizens should be thinking about today…we gobble something good in the lounge–noodles and dumplings and veggies, preferably…and then we wander around a bit being thankful that all is secure at the airport and that we have the opportunity for more adventures in this wonderful part of the world. . .mmm, aaaah!

Cathay Airlines whisks us in and out of here in their typically soothing, efficient, and sweet manner. . .all airlines should be like Cathay, really…none better…cheers!

“Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrowmindedness…broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the Earth all one’s lifetime.”–Mark Twain…hear, hear!

Go somewhere foreign this year…it’s good for you, and…

You got to go–

Hong Kong is the perfect launching point for all of Southeast Asia and most of the rest of Asia.  The HK Airport is spacious, airy, and full of cozy corners for resting and gobbling tasty goodness.

When we have a long layover we pop into town and gobble down some typhoon crab…but not on this trip.  We have an efficient ninety-minute layover that allows us a quick bowl before heading to the Land of Smiles: Thailand. . .mmm, aaahh!

Be sure to keep Hong Kong in mind whenever you plan your next Asian adventure. . .this is the hub for Cathay Pacific Airways–one of our favorite airlines of all time…so you really can’t go wrong here.  Book a ticket now and ROCK IT!

Hope to see you out and about. . .safe travels.

Chillin’ wit da Chinese–

We love hangin’, sippin’, eatin’, and chattin’ with the Chinese people. . .Cantonese, Fukinese, Szechuanese, Taiwanese, Hunanese, etc. and so on…they are all wonderful.  Switched-on, alive, hungry, and thirsty. . .just the way we like all of our friends to be–mmm, aaahh!

It is always magical to be here because we learn that things are basically the same everywhere. . .people all over the world want the same things. . .there is little reason to be afraid of anyone anywhere…you just give respect and you get respect–simple.  So simple yet always complicated by various superstitions and social philosophies and societal needs and excessive pride. . .if only we could all keep things simple, for there is great wisdom in simplicity…if only.

I send you elementary diplomatic vibes from the streets and restaurants of Hong Kong. . .feel them. . .they are good for your peace of mind.

MMM!  Hong Kong is a great town for hanging and eating and sipping. . .we absolutely love it here.  And it is easy to visit…you just jump on a plane, eat some meals, take some naps, read some books, and BOOM, you are here.  Grab your baggage, grab a cab, and you can be in the heart of town in about 25 minutes. . .this means that even if you are laying over in HK on your way to some other wonderful destination, then you can easily pop into town for a great meal before catching your next flight–YES!  So convenient, so good, so magical.

Flying around this tiny rock floating amidst the 14-billion-light-year vastness of the universe is a great privilege and honor. . .we get to see that people EVERYWHERE are ultimately the same–everyone loves a good laugh, good food, good drink, feeling respected, and everyone loves to return respect when they feel that they have been respected. . .oh and everyone also wants to feel warm and safe and secure and that they have a purpose.  If only all of these things could be available for all 7 billion folks on the planet. . .if only.

So, I send you satisfyingly wishful vibes from the restaurants of Hong Kong. . .feel them. . .they can help us all keep the conversation regarding human existence moving upward and onward.

#1 skyline…planet Earth–

WOW!  The skyline here in Hong Kong bedazzles us every time we see it…especially at night.  It is quite possibly the most dramatic skyline on the planet simply because it feels like a kinetic and scintillating wall of light and sound that is easily viewed from one vantage point. . .no need to move around looking for a better view–there it is, right in your face…just stand here and enjoy.

Plus, when you are somehow given the opportunity to experience this thing with the love of your life…well, that just makes everything spectaculicious!

Szechuan cuisine in Hong Kong–

YUM!  We love Szechuan cuisine, and we are happy to be dining in one of the best purveyors of this stuff right here in Hong Kong.  The restaurant is called San Xi Lou…it is located in the Mid-Levels section of Central, and it ROCKS–jaaaa!!

We can smell and feel the Szechuan peppercorns as we enter, and this makes go, ‘mmm, aaaahh,’ as we immediately sense that the food is going to be tasty and impactful here.  So we get busy ordering and gobbling. . .some of the things we devour include spicy sliced pig ears and spicy sliced cucumbers as appetizers…a seafood stew that is delicious, fragrant, varied, and swimming in a broth that we wish we could package and distribute to everyone back home–totally top-notch…chongqing chicken–right in our wheelhouse…mapo tofu–powerful and sweat-inducing–YES…and a Szechuan fish stew that is blowing us away–totally delectable and quite possibly the star of the meal–GOBBLE!

All of this is washed down with multiple bottles of icy-cold Tsingtao–really the only drink that holds up to this food. . .our sympathies go out to the folks around us drinking French red wine–hmmmm, live and learn.

The staff here is wonderful, the atmosphere is welcoming, and the food is outstanding. . .so, the next time you find yourself hankerin’ for some good Szechuan food while hangin’ in Hong Kong please consider popping into San Xi Lou. . .this place will scratch your Szechuan itch like few other places outside of Szechuan province itself can…hao-hao!

Things are BIG in this small town–

KAPOWY!  In Hong Kong the Banyan trees are big. . .the shopping malls are big and ‘Olympian’. . .the apartment buildings are jaw-droppingly big. . .and the Rolls Royces are big and always come in threes–cuz three is better than one, plus it’s probably considered “lucky” to have three…hao-hao!

We love strolling around this small town–amazingly, Hong Kong is not very big in actual square kilometers of area…be sure to slow down and take in the sights and sounds and fragrances around you the next time you visit The Fragrant Harbor…so much to see here, there, and everywhere and sooooo little time.  The more you explore, the more magic this town reveals…mmmm, aaaahh!

Michelin-starred dim sum–

This is dim sum at Tim Ho Wan in the West Kowloon section of Hong Kong, and it is all delicious.  Tim Ho Wan is famous because it is the least expensive restaurant in the world to receive a Michelin star for quality–BOOM!

Probably the most famous item to gobble here is the pork filled buns. . .the buns are delicate, golden brown, and crispy on the outside…and on the inside we find a delicious pork stew concoction that makes us go, “aaaahh!”

EVERYTHING is tasty here…shrimp dumplings, pork dumplings, shrimp/veggie dumplings, veggie dumplings, tofu wraps in a rich beef sauce, etc. and so on. . .really good dim sum, really inexpensive prices, free-flowing pots of tea, and extremely delicious bites here, there and everywhere.

There are three or four of these restaurants scattered all over Hong Kong. . .I say find one, plan on waiting a bit because they are extremely popular and always packed, settle in once you get a table, and enjoy all of the goodness that comes your way in Michelin-starred quality at totally affordable prices.

I send you high bang-for-your-buck vibes from Tim Ho Wan. . .feel them. . .they will make you smile real big like.

Seafood galore…Hong Kong–

BAM!  We love eating at restaurants in and around seafood markets all over the world…and they have lots of GREAT ONES in the Lei Yue Mun neighborhood of Hong Kong–mmm, aaaahh!

The tanks throughout the market are filled with fruits of the sea that are familiar and many that are unfamiliar. . .one thing that is absolutely guaranteed here is that everything is fresh and will be totally delectable when cooked up.

We end up dining in a place called the Sea King Garden Restaurant after a nice stroll through all of the tanks and vendors, and this restaurant does a wonderful job.  We gobble shrimp, abalone, clams, crab, lobster, sauteed fishes of multiple sizes and shapes and flavors, sauteed veggies, etc. with endless bottles of Blue Girl beer from Belgium–so fancy–and endless glasses of dry white wine. . .it is a feast, a veritable feast of goodness and love and joy and deliciousness. . .damn, we love it here.

Please, if you ever find yourself hangin’ out in Hong Kong wanting to do seafood in a big way, then definitely consider making your way out to the Sea King Garden Restaurant in Lei Yue Mun . . .you will have the time of your life, your belly will be full of goodness, and you will sleep a deep satisfying sleep when you return home for the evening.
