Out there…

photo 1  photo 5photo 4…in the grand landscape of existence we are on our own.  Yes, we are connected to every thing and every person around us, but we gotta find our own way. . .blaze our own paths. . .become what we know we can be.  We offer help to others along the way and others offer help to us as needed–wonderful–yet it is the responsibility of each of us to make the best decisions possible moment-to-moment that allow us to bloom. . .prosper. . .be great in some way.  If we resist this responsibility, then unhealthy things await us.  Surround me with folks who accept this responsibility. . .engorge me with people who crave this responsibility. . .immerse me in with the ones who get this.  The others. . .well, I have a hard time with them.

Southwest Texas encourages one to think these thoughts. . .stand out in the open–be exposed. . .and sip orange juice while breathing in and breathing out the crisp clean desert air. . .mmmm, aaaaahh!

I send you eyes-wide-open vibes from west Texas. . .feel them. . .they are sometimes mysterious and slightly disturbing.

It’s lovely out there.

Go get it!

IMG_0194 IMG_0211JAAA!  Whatever you want, go get it.  You can’t sit and wait. . .you can’t just hope. . .you can’t simply whisper desires out into some imaginary space to some imaginary entity. . .you. . .got. . .to. . .go. . .get. . .it.  Cheers!

I send you go-get-’em vibes from Marfa, Texas. . .feel ’em. . .they are magical.

Drive. . .reward–

IMG_0012 IMG_0028 IMG_0046 IMG_0047POW!  We drove through all of the above in west Texas to get to our reward. . .the lovely cocktails you see here. . .mmmm, aaaahh!  We are modern-day cowboys and cowgirls. . .no different than the rough-riders of just a hundred years ago or so who rode horses through this landscape to arrive in a small town just over the Pecos Mountains, find the main saloon, and settle down for a whiskey and a MARGARITA?. . .yes, a margarita, hombre–make it salty, be sure to use only fresh lime juice (if you can find any given the recent lime shortage), shake it with ice, and fill it to the rim. . .yeeee-haaaa!!  We will ingest these fine beverages, and we may have two or three MORE cuz we are modern-day cowboys and cowgirls, indeed.

I send you rewarding vibes from west Texas. . .feel them. . .they are worth the effort.

As it is–

IMG_0109 IMG_0112 IMG_0113“As it is?  Yes, as it is, please.”  These are the opening lines in a play by Harold Pinter called ‘No Man’s Land.’  The phrase, “as it is?” is an English way of asking if someone wants their whiskey neat, straight, with no ice. . .as it is.  We can use similar phrasing to comment on some of the buildings that Donald Judd left as he found them in Marfa, Texas so that we can enjoy them neat, straight, with no embellishment. . .as they are.  So many things in life are best enjoyed as they are: whiskey, historic buildings, Texas barbecue, sushi, good friends, romantic partners, #2 common pine, natural wonders. . .the list can go on and on.  I love things as they are, and you will too if you ever find yourself wanderin’ around on planet Earth wonderin’ what it all means.

I send you “as it is” vibes from Marfa, Texas. . .feel them. . .you really don’t need much else.

Here, there, everywhere–

photo 2 photo 1photo 3Standin’ here. . .walkin’ there. . .feelin’ everywhere in the world of Donald Judd.  Judd designed and built windows, doors, tables, chairs, shelves, beds, rooms, storage units, art installations of grand scale, and so much more. . .mmmm, aaaahh!  What an honor to walk through his world. . .our world. . .and feel the magnificence of space.

“Nothing is too wonderful to be true if it be consistent with the laws of nature.”–Michael Farraday.  Donald Judd understands this. . .and so should we all.

I send you “true” vibes from Judd’s world in Marfa, Texas. . .feel them. . .they are oh-so wonderful.

Inspired by Donald Judd–

photo 3 photo 2So, we got the #2 common pine cut to order. . .we got ’em all sanded silky smooth. . .next we saturated ’em all with tung oil. . .now they dry for a couple of days before applying more tung oil. . .dry again. . .more oil. . .more drying.  I am quite confident that Donald Judd followed a similar process for the magnificent bookshelves he constructed for his large library down in Marfa, Texas.  We can’t bring any Judd pieces from Marfa back to New York, but we can certainly inject some Judd vibes into any pieces that we construct here at home.  I love recreating Donald Judd furniture, and you will too if you ever find yourself with some extra 2x12s layin’ around lookin’ to be transformed into something special.

I send you woodworking vibes from New York City. . .feel them. . .they are easier to enjoy than you think.

It can’t be wrong…

IMG_0089 IMG_0091…when it feels so right.

To find the best stuff in Marfa, Texas you simply gotta follow the signs that feel wrong or kooky.  For example, the El Cosmico is a trailer-tent-teepee “hotel,” and it is extremely worthy of your attention.  El Cosmico offers wonderful Airstream campers for cozy sleeping. . .tents and campsites for those who want to sleep on the actual surface of the Earth. . .and teepees for those who want to go all the way and do a native-American throwback thang.  Whatever choice fits your constitution you will find El Cosmico a lodging experience like few others in these great United States.  I love El Cosmico, and I know that some of you will too if you ever find yourself wandering around Marfa lookin’ for a place to sleep peacefully.

I send you oh-so right vibes from El Cosmico. . .feel them. . .they are good for you.

What’s the word?

IMG_0055 IMG_0053THUNDERBIRD!  Jaaaa. . .this is another place to stay in Marfa, Texas–some people love it and some people hate it.  I guess the Thunderbird Hotel is simply a slick, somewhat-tricked-out motel in the center of town with lots of “sophisticated” design elements. . .it’s worth checking out–just be aware that train tracks run along the edge of the property making for interesting sleeping challenges at three in the morning when the west Texas express comes chuggin’ through town. . .mmmm, aaaahh!  I love hangin’ at the Thunderbird at night, and you might too if you ever find yourself lookin’ for a place to lay down your head in Marfa.

I send you erratic vibes from the Thunderbird. . .feel them. . .they will keep you awake all night long.

Wood U Drive Me 2 Marfa?

IMG_0169 IMG_0161 IMG_0159YES!  Eye no u wood drive me 2 Marfa. . .eye due.

#2 common pine 2x12s are Donald Judd’s primary material for all of the benches, tables, chairs, and shelves that he designed and built for himself in all of his living and working spaces here in Marfa, Texas.  Old cars and trucks are the preferred mode of transport for Judd and many of the folks hangin’ in Marfa now.  And I’ll be gosh-darned if there isn’t even a classic water tower right smack dab in the center of town.  Such a wide variety of things for a curious human to see and do here. . .I think I might like to stay just awhile. . .mmmm, aaaahh!

I send you expansively Earthy vibes from Marfa, Texas. . .feel them. . .they are humble and good.

Multiple dimensions–

photo 5 photo 5 photo 4Where are we?  Are we here?  Are we there?  Are we everywhere?  Are we anywhere?  I think about this and that. . .you chat about those and whatnot. . .we go to sleep. . .we get up. . .we go places. . .we eat things. . .we drink stuff. . .we “do something useful”. . .we go to sleep again.  What-what, where-where, who-who, when-when, why-why??  Here in Marfa it is easy to contemplate all of this and so much more.  Ultimately we just know that we are, and that we must go on.  Ok?  Ok.

I send you multidimensional vibes from Marfa, Texas. . .feel them. . .they will keep your mind occupied for a long, long time.
