Is it art?

photo 4 photo 3 photo 2BAM!  Dan Flavin worked with fluorescent lights. . .John Chamberlain worked with crumpled automobile parts. . .Donald Judd worked with wood, concrete, paper, pencil, paint, stone, etc.. . .mmmhhmmmm!  What are these things?  What are they trying to say to us?  What does this work mean?  Who knows.  Nobody knows.  All I know is this: these pieces are full of life energy. . .so I say, just soak it all up and move on enjoying as much of your life as possible.  Gore Vidal once defined art as, “a small ‘yes’ amidst the vast ‘no’ of the universe.’  Yes.  These pieces–all art–represent, yes.  Yes, someone was here, and now you are here.  Enjoy.  Time is short so just enjoy.  This is enough.

I send you “yes” vibes from Marfa, Texas. . .feel them. . .they are so much more fun than “no.”

Nash Metropolitan–

IMG_0552 IMG_0554YES!  It’s an automobile from the 50s and early 60s called the Nash Metropolitan just sittin’ on the corner here in Manhattan, New York City.  Spring causes all kinds of things to bloom: cherry trees, tulips, gladiolas, AND Metropolitans–niiiice!  We don’t see any of these things during winter so another strike against winter. . .I have no problem with climate change if it means that we get to see more blossoms of all types–even if they will all possibly be underwater at some point. . .ah well, it’s all about give and take, right?  Right.  I love the Nash Metropolitan, and you will too if you ever see one sittin’ around town.

Judd was here–

IMG_0196 IMG_0197IMG_0228Donald Judd, artist, left his mark on planet Earth down here in Marfa, Texas, his adopted home.  After establishing himself in New York City, Judd felt confined and hindered by big-city life. . .so he returned to the southwest where he remembered seeing crisp open spaces as a young man in the military.  He drove around west Texas until he came upon the town of Marfa. . .he rented a house for a few months, loved it, and then moved his family down and stayed for the remainder of his life.  He acquired many buildings during his time in Marfa: an old bank, an old supermarket, old military barracks, old airplane hangars, open fields, a ranch, and various warehouses in which he lived and worked.  He loved it down in Marfa because he said that he could think here. . .harder to think in New York City with all of the pressures of city life.  He died quite suddenly in 1994 after being diagnosed with lymphoma, but his work lives on and on.  Mmmmhhmmmm. . ..  Judd’s life makes for quite a story. . .please Google him to learn more. . .you will like.

I send you vibes full of space for thinking from Marfa, Texas. . .feel them. . .they are roomy enough for all of us.
