Malnati’s is generally recognized as one of the originators of this filling food item. One of the Malnati dudes started the Pizzeria Uno restaurant chain…very popular…lotsa gobble-worthy items can be had in one of these dining spots. Another Malnati stuck with his original purpose and set up a number of his namesake restaurants here in Chicago to put out lots of tasty versions of Chicago deep dish pizza.
Is it pizza, really? This will be debated forever and ever. . .what cannot be debated is that these things are tasty and most-worthy of your attention. . .the only problem is that this seems more like a tomato and cheese pie to me than an actual pizza. So, we eat, we enjoy, and we move on knowing that we have gobbled an important piece of the culinary history of this great city.
We know that there are supposedly “better” places for deep dish pizza, and we will get to those eventually. . .but in order to understand this food item, it is important to start at the source and work our way around from there/here. Definitely pop into a Malnati’s when you are in town…we recommend the original? location on N. State Street near the northern tip of Rush Street–it’s spacious, the vibe is chill, the staff are welcoming and efficient, and the deep dish pie is quite good. . .be sure to wash it all down with a pint or three of a local brew–jaaa!!
