BAM! New Glarus, Wisconsin is known as “America’s Little Switzerland,” and we love it here. Located in south-central Wisconsin just about 30 miles south of Madison this place is poppin’! There are shops selling ‘Swiss’ trinkets, old taverns serving tasty locally-made beer–the New Glarus Brewery is only a mile up the road. . .Swiss-style chalet inns, and a couple of extremely tasty restaurants. . .all situated amidst glorious rolling hills that evoke the feel of Switzerland herself–these ain’t the Alps, but they will do in a pinch. . .jaaaa!
Our vote for the number-one hotel in town is the Chalet Landhaus Inn, which just happens to be owned by the same folks who run the New Glarus Hotel a block away. There are a couple of motels in and around town as well that look somewhat cozy, but the Landhaus seems to deserve the top spot in our minds. There is ample parking, the staff are chilled and welcoming, the rooms are cozy and straightforward, the location is right on the edge of town, and the complimentary breakfast is generous and delicious with lots of eggs, meats, breads, fruit, and strong free-flowing coffee. . .mmmm, aaaahh!
Swiss folks founded this town in the early 19th century and many of the original buildings still survive to this day. There is not much to do here, but there is just enough to experience, eat, and drink to help you enjoy the passage of time while exploring the great midwest of the United States. Come to New Glarus, check into a hotel, sip some fresh New Glarus beer–we love Spotted Cow–slurp down some delicious cheese fondue, gobble a wienerschnitzel or three, enjoy the live music over at the New Glarus Hotel, and you will sleep real well once the day and evening are spent.
