The drive from the Lands’ End world headquarters to Dubuque, Iowa–aka ‘the Masterpiece on the Mississippi’–is just about one hour…making it an ideal getaway from the hustle and bustle of Dodgeville, Wisconsin…mmmmhhmmmm!
Dubuque is named for the dude who founded this town, a French Canadian fur trader called Julien Dubuque. He set up shop here back in the late 18th century, and now we get to enjoy the fruits of some of his labors in this straightforward and cozy place. The Port of Dubuque is full of activity with coves and marinas for recreational boaters. . .there are also slightly larger docks for commercial activity like riverboat rides, loading and unloading of cargo, and a few floating restaurants. . .plus, a place called the Grand Harbor Resort sits close by with casinos, a water park, restaurants, and rooms with delicious views of the mighty Mississippi River…jaaa!
We drop our stuff at the Holiday Inn on Main Street right in the heart of downtown Dubuque, and in about an hour we are able to walk from one end of town to the other taking in the Port area, a weekend street fair and farmers’ market, cafes, diners, restaurants, etc. with lots of folks out enjoying a stroll, sipping iced tea, picking up breakfast, chit-chatting, and generally enjoying the passage of time.
Dubuque is situated at a spot where the borders of Wisconsin, Illinois, and Iowa converge…this means that we have Iowans, Illinois-ans, and Wisconsinites all intermingling with each other. . .folks from the heartland of America all doing their best to get along and soak up some sunshine. . .wowee-wow-wow. . .how did we end up here at this particular point in time? No matter. . .we are simply feeling gratitude that we have the opportunity to be in this part of the U.S.. . .lots to see, hear, taste, and do–all of it just as ‘exotic’ as any other place on Earth…just gotta open our eyes and see it and feel the joy and magic around us right here, right NOW, in Dubuque, Iowa.
I send you crossroad vibes from Dubuque. . .feel them. . .they are good and satisfying.
