POW! Another wonderful bar/restaurant has closed down in the Soho section of Manhattan because the landlord wants to triple the rent…this one is Mekong Restaurant on the corner of Sixth Avenue and King Street…damn!
Mekong is/was a Vietnamese joint with lots of cozy wood stools, tables, and chairs…lots of cool staff…lots of cool food…lots of cool drink…and most importantly two really chilled and cool owners from southern Vietnam: Brian and his brother, Kevin…two dudes who just cooked good food, kept the drinks flowin’, and loved to chit-chat and drink with customers. In the summer they would throw open all of the windows, place lots of tables and chairs outside, turn on the ceiling fans, and if you squinted your eyes just a bit it would actually feel like you were gobbling crispy fried spring rolls and sipping rose somewhere down in Saigon. Damn, damn, damn. . .we and all of the hundreds of other folks who attended the recent closing party will miss this place. . .and we will not patronize the Chipotle or whatever establishment occupies the space moving forward. Hopefully Brian and company will reopen Mekong in another location some time soon. . .until then we say, “chao anh, friend!”
I send you disappointed vibes from the old Mekong space down in Soho. . .feel them. . .they are here to remind us that the only constant is change–oh boy.
