Over on Washington Place just off Sixth Avenue in the Greenwich Village section of Manhattan there is a basement bar now called Formerly Crow’s Bar. This name is derived from the fact that the previous bar located here was a legendary old NYU student hangout called The Stoned Crow. The Stoned Crow was always packed with students sucking down beverages of all sorts and gobbling top-notch pub grub. . .the place was dark, musty, stayed open ’til 4 a.m., and most famously, the walls and ceiling were covered with the absolute coolest black-and-white photos of just about every classic rock star or band from the early 1960s onward. The best photos were in the bathrooms…folks used to linger in both the men’s room AND the lady’s room gazing drunkenly at the amazing pix of jimmy page, jimmy hendrix, roger daltry, keith moon, david gilmour, john lennon, axl rose, clapton, ray davies, iggy pop, bowie, blondie, pat benetar, lou reed, janis joplin, metallica, jagger, richards, plant, etc. and so on. Unfortunately, there was a lease dispute with the landlord. . .it went unresolved, and sadly, the woman who owned The Stoned Crow packed up all of her photos and posters and departed.
The new owners recognize the special feeling that so many people had for this old bar and have renamed it Formerly Crow’s. . .the walls are bare now, but the place still stays open late and still serves up tasty and satisfying pub grub…plus, they maintain the reasonable prices that many students appreciate and require from a drinking joint, and business appears to be good as a result.
We pop in here occasionally for a tasty brew or three, some satisfying grub, and an opportunity to reminisce and recall what once was an amazing place to drink the night away and what is now a serviceable place to drink the afternoon away–we’re too old for the late night kid thing. . .mmm, aaaahh!
I send you evolving vibes from Formerly Crow’s Bar. . .feel them. . .they will keep you moving upward and onward.
