Here we are checkin’ out one of the most interesting wats in all of Chiang Mai: Wat U-Mong. U-Mong means ‘tunnel’ in Thai, and this wat has tunnels running all through and under it. One of the head monks hundreds of years ago ordered tunnels to be dug here and the tunnel walls to be painted with rural scenes–all of this was done, it is said, to keep a deranged monk who tended to wander off and get lost in the surrounding woods within the grounds when he felt the need to get out into nature. . .wow, might have been easier to just lock the door to his room each night. In any case, we now get to enjoy the cozy atmosphere of this place as we explore the various passageways that lead around the grounds, house shrines to different versions of the Buddha, and keep us from getting lost in the woods. Wat U-Mong ROCKS! Check it out when you visit Chiang Mai. . .just a short ride west on Doi Suthep Road. . .you will love it–I gar-ron-taaay!
