…and it goes like this. The guy you see above is “not the Lord Buddha.” A plaque next to him states this emphatically; rather, this guy is a monk who lived hundreds of years ago and who, in his prime, was thought to be very good-looking, fit, and desirable. His good looks caused women to desire him. . .other monks who saw women desiring this guy then began to desire women. . .this is all bad and forbidden for Buddhist monks–no desire for anything allowed. So, this particular monk decided to make himself undesirable by becoming fat and disgusting. . .and also to make the point that beauty should really reside within one’s self instead of on the exterior of one’s self. Mission accomplished according to the aforementioned plaque. . .yes, internal beauty–good. . .external, superficial, temporary beauty–not so good. . .got it.
