POW! I have spent most of my birthdays over the past twenty-five years at the East Deck Motel in Montauk, Long Island, New York, and this year we can do this no more. The owner sold the East Deck late last year, and now it is closed for renovation or refurbishment or all out reconstruction. . .no one really knows for sure what is going to happen to this venerable old cozy place. Of course, I am a bit saddened by this development. . .we have to stay at Gurney’s now–oh boo-hoo what a drag me with my first-world problems and all–but we are holding onto some hope that the new owners will maintain some of the feel and integrity and warm humbleness of the old place and somehow bring the East Deck to an interesting new level of comfort, efficiency, and inviting-ness. We hope for this, but we will not be holding our breath. . .breathe in, breathe out. Nevertheless, the Ditch Witch–a great food truck–is still here, and Ditch Plains Beach ain’t goin’ nowhere. . .so all is not so bad after all. I love the remnants of the East Deck, the Ditch Witch, and Ditch Plains Beach, and I know that you will too if you ever find yourself wanderin’ around at the far eastern end of Long Island’s south fork lookin’ for stuff to reminisce about.
I send you memorable vibes from the old East Deck Motel. . .feel them. . .they are worthy of holding onto forever and ever.
